PLANT DESCRIPTION

An annual or perennial climber with hairy branches. Leaves trifoliate, leaflets ovate or rhomboid ovate, membranous, pubescent above; flowers purple in axillary drooping pendulous racemes; fruits curved pods, densely clothed with pale brown irritant hairs, seeds black, ovoid, 4-6 per pod.

MEDICINAL PROPERTIES
Plant pacifies vitiated vata, pitta, constipation, impotency, Parkinsonism, kidney diseases, neuropathy, worm infestations, fever, and general debility. Mucuna pruriens is an herbaceous, twining climber with trifoliate leaves. The seeds are astringent and tonic; they possess mild insecticidal activity. The leaves of the plant are applied to ulcers. The seeds contain the bioactive alkaloids mucunine, mucunadine, mucuadinine, pruriendine, and nicotine, as well as �-sitosterol, glutathione, lecithin, oils, venolic and gallic acids. The seed with its coat showed the presence of a number of bioactive substances including tryptamine, alkylamines, steroids, flavonoids, coumarins, cardenolides, etc.

Indications
The seeds, due to the presence of L-DOPA and nicotine, are in great demand. L-DOPA is a neurotransmitter precursor, an effective drug for relief in Parkinson's disease. Seed powder including seed coat is an ingredient of several ayurvedic drugs given as an aphrodisiac. It is prophylactic against oligospermia, and useful in increasing sperm count, ovulation in women, etc. It prevents male and female sterility and acts as a nervine tonic.
 
 
Dosage:
10gms  twice a day after meals with hot water.
Please maintain an hour's gap between intake of ayurvedic products and other allopathic drugs.
